At Your Perfect Invite, we believe in capturing the essence of cultural celebrations, and what better occasion to showcase our Scottish-inspired designs than Burns Night? In this blog, we invite you to explore the rich heritage of Burns Night and discover how our carefully crafted Scottish-inspired wedding stationery designs can add a touch of Celtic charm to your special day.
Understanding Burns Night
Celebrated annually on January 25th, Burns Night pays tribute to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. This cherished event brings together friends and family for a night of poetry recitations, traditional Scottish music, and of course, a fabulous feast featuring the iconic haggis. It’s a celebration of Scottish culture and literary legacy, but it’s only one of many traditions that Scotland is famous for.
Here, we take a look at some other symbols synonymous with Scotland, and ones that can be beautifully incorporated into any wedding with a Scottish theme.
Tartan: The Heartbeat of Scotland
At the core of Scottish identity lies the beloved tartan, a fabric that symbolises clans, history, and a sense of belonging. Whether you have Scottish roots or simply admire the beauty of tartan patterns, incorporating them into your wedding stationery can add to your celebration with a touch of Scottish allure.
Some Tartan-Inspired Wedding Stationery Designs:

The above two designs have used tartan in the shape of a heart which gives excellent flexibility on the type of tartan we use. We will always do our best to get hold of a specific pattern of tartan if it is important to your clan!
However, you can also use tartan in the form of a ribbon if you would like something more tactile. We have less flexibility on the pattern type here, but happy to discuss your requirements and look into what type of ribbon we can get hold of for you!
The designs below feature the red Royal Stewart tartan, and the green and blue Black Watch tartan, two of the most popular and well-known tartans around!
THE TRINITY KNOT
Both of the designs below combine with the Trinity Knot. This is a popular design element for many Celtic wedding invitations as the three points of the knot represent powerful symbols of love, friendship, and strength. Its interweaving lines, without beginning or end, represent eternity – which couldn’t be more perfect really as you get ready to commit to your partner for the rest of your lives.
The Thistle: The Strength of Scotland
The thistle holds a special place in Scottish symbolism and history, and its association with Scotland can be traced back to a famous legend. The story goes that during a surprise nighttime invasion by Norse warriors, one of the attackers stepped on a thistle. The pain from the thistle’s prickly thorns alerted the Scots to the impending danger, allowing them to defend themselves against the invaders and secure their victory.
Grateful for the thistle’s role in thwarting the attack, the thistle became a symbol of resilience, bravery, and the unyielding spirit of the Scottish people. Over time, the thistle evolved into a national emblem, embodying the qualities of strength and determination that the Scots valued.
In addition to the legendary origin story, the thistle also found its way into historical symbolism. It was adopted as a badge by various Scottish clans, further cementing its status as a representation of Scottish identity. In the 15th century, King James III of Scotland issued an edict that made the thistle a national emblem, and it has since been incorporated into various official and ceremonial symbols of Scotland.
Today, the thistle is an enduring symbol of Scotland, proudly displayed on official documents, coins, and military insignias. Its association with resilience and the ability to overcome adversity resonates with the Scottish people, making it a fitting emblem for the nation. The thistle’s distinctive appearance and rich symbolism make it an integral part of Scotland’s cultural heritage.

The Highland Cow: The Rural Side of Scotland
The Scottish Highland Cow, a distinctive breed native to the rugged landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, is known for its iconic appearance and hardiness.
Recognisable by its long, shaggy coat, which provides insulation against harsh weather, and impressive curved horns, the breed has a majestic yet approachable demeanor.
With a history dating back centuries, Highland cattle were traditionally kept by Scottish clans for their resilience in challenging environments, serving as valuable sources of meat, milk, and hides. Today, these cattle continue to captivate locals and tourists alike, symbolising Scotland’s rich rural heritage and enduring connection to its picturesque landscapes.

The Deer: The Culture of Scotland
Deer are intrinsically linked to Scotland’s identity, embodying the country’s rich natural heritage, historical traditions, and cultural symbolism.
Scotland’s landscapes, particularly the Highlands, host various deer species, with the majestic red deer playing a prominent role.
Historically, deer hunting has been a traditional pursuit, reflecting both sustenance and sport, and the deer’s presence in clan crests underscores its cultural significance.
Literary references and folklore further embed deer in Scotland’s narrative, portraying them as symbols of natural beauty and untamed landscapes. They are so stunning, that they deserve to be featured on your wedding stationery!
